CLEMENS, Samuel

I'm looking for information on the family and origin of Samuel Clemens (various spellings) in Salem, Massachusetts between about 1680 and 1700.

Based on family records & LDS library records, our Clemans family branch can be traced back through a Philip Clemons in Charlton Mass, to a marriage between a Samuel Clemens and a Sarah (or possibly Susan) (possibly) MackIntyre, in 1697 in Salem Mass.  That family supposedly has a son Philip in about 1705, who had another son Philip, who ended up in Charlton, Mass.

In other records, Perley's "History of Salem", a Samuel Clemens is listed as arriving in Salem in 1686.  He's listed as having a son Samuel, born in the 1680's.  That might be the one I'm looking for.  That volume has no other information about the son.

I'd like to find whether our fragmentary records that show our Clemans branch as being in Salem at this period were correct, and if possible tracing the branch back earlier.

Thanks,

JACOBS, George and Henry

I doing research project to establish the family line of 2 famous persons.  The first was George Jacobs, of South Danvers (I think), who was tried and hanged in the Salem Witch Trials in 1692.  The 2nd is Henry Jacobs, age 21, who was killed during the Battle of Lexington and Concord in April 1776.  Henry is buried off Lowell Street in a small plot belonging primarily to the Proctor family (also of Salem witch fame).  But I've never been able to clearly establish how he was connected to the Proctors (possibly through marriage?).  I grew up in Peabody but now live in NJ.  I'd be grateful for any information or data that you could provide.

Thank you,

CLEMENS

Is anything known about the Samuel Clemons family listed in Perley's 3 volume history of Salem as arriving in 1687? I've been able to track our Clemans family branch back solidly to  about 1740 in Charlton, Mass.  Before that, records are fragmentary.

There are references to a Phillip Clemons born in Salem, Mass around 1705.  He's supposedly the son of a Samuel & Sarah Clemons.

The only possibly hard evidence I've found in online Salem Vital Records is a mention of a marriage between a Phillip Clemons and a Margaret Putney/Pudney in 1725.  Perley's history is the first hard evidence I've found of there even being a Samuel Clemons in Salem at  that time.   Of course, there were other Samuel's with "matching"  surnames in the Massachusetts colony at that time; Samuel Clements from Haverhill; Samuel Clement from Dorchester/Boston, etc.;  none of these look like a feasible candidate for our family though (dates problematic; wives names don't match, etc.)

This effort is part of tracing what to me is an interesting coincidence; starting with my grandfather, the most recent four families in that part of my family tree, were all in Massachusetts in the 1600's, and all had descendants that migrated to Wisconsin in the 1850's.  The names were (using our spelling) Clemans, McIntosh, Goodall, and Mossman.

Thanks!
